Because lilac is already a doubly-diluted color, a lilac tri is a layered result: a diluted base plus a pattern that expresses over it. It stacks even further with the fluffy (long-coat) gene, and a fluffy lilac tri sits at the very top of the bully color market.
The genetics: blue plus chocolate plus tan points
Lilac tri needs three separate genetic conditions to all be true at once. Each is recessive, so each needs two copies to show:
- Dilution, d/d (blue): turns black pigment down to blue-grey.
- Brown, b/b (chocolate): turns black pigment to brown.
- Tan points, at/at with ky/ky (tri): the agouti tan points, shown only when the K locus (ky/ky) allows them through.

Why lilac tri is so rare and expensive
Lilac tri is rare for a simple reason: a lot of recessives have to stack in one dog. - Registration: both ABKC and UKC accept lilac tri and every other tri variant, from registered parents.
- The show ring: lilac tri is fully acceptable in both. Albinism is disqualified in both and merle is a UKC disqualification, but ABKC permits all colors and patterns, so lilac tri is fine everywhere.
