Things people ask
about coat color.
No. A disqualification is purely about the AKC French Bulldog show standard and conformation eligibility. Blue, lilac, chocolate and merle are all DQ under AKC, yet the dogs are healthy pets and are accepted by other registries like the UKC and ABKC. The one real health caveat here is double merle (two merle copies), which carries genuine deafness and vision risk, which is why the tool flags it separately.
Every locus starts on its first option, which the tool treats as not carried: homozygous for the common, wild-type allele. So a pairing where you only set merle and dilute is calculated as if both parents are clear on everything else. You never have to fill in all nine loci to get a prediction; set only what you know from a DNA panel or from the parents' visible colors.
Agouti (fawn, sable, tan points) only shows when the K locus allows it. A dog that is solid at K (KB) masks agouti entirely. To see fawn or tan points express, set the K locus / brindle option to "Allows agouti" (ky/ky) on the relevant parent. This mirrors how the genes actually interact, which is why both loci live in the advanced set.
Recessive colors like blue, cocoa, cream, fluffy and pied only appear when a pup inherits two copies. A pup with one copy looks completely standard but can pass the color to its own litters. The hidden-carriers panel shows the odds that a visually normal pup from this pairing silently carries a copy: the gap between what you can see and what a DNA test reveals.
The math is exact Mendelian inheritance per locus, which is how these genes pass down, including the real epistasis where recessive red and the K locus mask other genes. What it can't capture is expression variation, modifier genes, and the handful of colors that involve more than one gene interacting in messy ways. Treat the percentages as statistical odds across many puppies, not a guarantee for any single litter of five.
