The only thing that separates a ghost tri from a true tri is the K locus. A true tri is at/at with ky/ky, so nothing masks the agouti pattern and the tan points show clearly. A ghost tri is also at/at, but it carries at least one copy of dominant black (KB), which masks the points.
That is the whole difference. The tan-point genotype is identical on both dogs. Swap the K locus from KB to ky/ky and a ghost tri would show as a full, clean tri. This is why a ghost tri is best understood as tri under dominant black, not as a color of its own.
Why breeders value ghost tris
A ghost tri carries and passes full tri. Because the tan points are genetically intact, a ghost tri bred to a dog that is ky/ky can produce clear, full tri puppies. Are ghost tri bullies ABKC and UKC registered?
Yes, on both counts. A ghost tri is simply a tri, so it carries no registration or show downside in either bully registry:
- Registration: both the ABKC and the UKC accept a ghost tri without issue, the same as any other tri variant.
- The show ring: there is no penalty for a ghost tri. Merle is disqualified by UKC while ABKC permits all colors and patterns, and albinism is out in both, never tri.
So for a ghost tri, registry status is a non-issue. The color that gets a bully excluded is merle, and a ghost tri is nowhere near that line.
