A tri color American Bully wears tan points on its face, chest, and legs over a base color, the defining and most in-demand pattern in the breed. It comes from the agouti gene, and it only shows when the K locus lets it through. What is a tri color American Bully?

Tri, short for tri-color, is a pattern of tan points on the face, chest, and legs set over a base coat. The base is one color, the points are a second, tan shade, and the result reads as a clean, two-tone dog. It is the pattern the bully market chases hardest, and the reason so many programs are built around it.

Tri is not a color on its own. It is a pattern layered on top of whatever base color a dog already carries, which is why you see it advertised stacked with the dilution and brown genes as black tri, blue tri, chocolate tri, and lilac tri. Understand the base color and the tan points separately and the whole naming system falls into place.

The genetics: tan points on the A locus

Tan points come from the agouti gene, ASIP, usually called the A locus. The tan-point allele is written at, and a dog needs the genotype at/at to be tri. The A locus has a dominance order: Ay (fawn / sable) is on top, then at (tan points), then a (recessive black) at the bottom.

Because at outranks a, a dog carrying one of each (at/a) still shows tan points, as long as the K locus allows it. Tri only stays hidden two ways: under Ay, where a fawn dog can quietly carry at, or under dominant black at the K locus, covered below.

That K locus is the second half of the story. Tri only becomes visible when a dog is ky/ky (non-solid). If the dog carries dominant black (KB), the black overrides the agouti pattern and the tan points are masked into a ghost tri. So the full recipe for a visible tri is at/at plus ky/ky.

The tri color variants

Tri stacks on any base color, and the base is what gives each variant its name and its price. The tan points stay the same; the coat underneath changes with the dilution (d/d) and brown (b/b) genes.

  • Black tri (at/at ky/ky): tan points over a full-strength black base. The baseline tri.
  • Blue tri (d/d): tan points over a blue (diluted black) base. One of the two priciest tris.
  • Chocolate tri (b/b): tan points over a brown base from the recessive brown gene.

Champagne can carry tri too: a champagne dog (recessive red on a dilute base) can be at/at underneath, so a program can hide tan points inside a champagne line. Blue tri and lilac tri command the highest prices, because more recessive genes have to line up at once. When dominant black masks the points, you get a ghost tri instead, covered next.

Ghost tri: when dominant black masks the points

A ghost tri is genetically tri, at/at, but the dog also carries dominant black (KB). The dominant black covers the agouti pattern, so the tan points read as faint, washed-out ghost markings rather than clean points. Can two non-tri bullies produce a tri?

Yes. Two dogs that do not look tri can still produce a tri puppy, as long as both parents pass an at allele and the puppy comes out ky/ky. A fawn parent can carry at hidden under Ay, and a dominant-black or ghost-tri parent can carry it hidden under KB. Neither parent shows tan points, but the pairing can still stack them onto a puppy.

Are tri bullies ABKC and UKC registered?

Yes, on both counts. The ABKC and the UKC both accept every tri variant, black tri, blue tri, chocolate tri, and lilac tri included. Unlike the AKC world, where exotic colors are show disqualifications, there is no registration or show downside to tri in the bully registries.

The one pattern the registries treat differently is merle: UKC disqualifies it, while the ABKC standard permits all colors and patterns (albinism is disqualified in both). Either way, tri is never the problem.
