A puppy that does not gain weight in a 24-hour window is the earliest warning sign of a problem. By the time a puppy is visibly weaker than its littermates, you are already late. Daily weighing is non-negotiable for a serious breeder, but most weight tracking happens on scraps of paper or in unstructured notes, which means trends only become visible in retrospect.
The Puppy Weight Tracker turns daily weights into a live picture of litter health. Weigh each puppy at the same time every day, type the weight into the spreadsheet, and the calculations and color coding do the rest.
What the document does
It tracks daily weights for up to 12 puppies across the full 56 days from birth through go-home. For each puppy, it auto-calculates current weight, total weight gained since birth, and average daily gain. For the litter as a whole, it computes the litter average so each individual puppy can be compared against its littermates.
The conditional formatting is the part that earns its keep. Any day a puppy fails to gain weight compared to the previous day, the cell highlights. That single visual cue catches failure-to-thrive before it becomes critical.
What is included
- 56-day daily weight tracking grid for up to 12 puppies
- Auto-calculated current weight, total gain from birth, and average daily gain per puppy
- Litter average row that lets you compare each puppy to littermate norms
- Conditional formatting that flags any day a puppy did not gain weight compared to the previous day
- Per-puppy header capturing call name, sex, color, birth weight, and any identifying notes
- Printable PDF version for breeders who prefer paper for daily weighing in the whelping area
Format and how it works
Includes an editable spreadsheet (.xlsx) with live formulas plus a printable PDF version. The .xlsx works in Excel, Apple Numbers, and Google Sheets. Most breeders keep the spreadsheet open on a phone or tablet in the whelping area and enter weights right after the morning weigh-in.
Use one file per litter. Save it with the litter ID in the filename so it is searchable later.
Why this version is different
Most puppy weight charts are blank tables with no math. This one calculates trends automatically and flags anomalies with conditional formatting, which is what turns a record into a tool. The 12-puppy capacity covers larger litters without scrolling, and the per-puppy averages let you spot the puppy whose curve is diverging from littermates before it shows up physically.
Who this is for
For breeders running working programs who want failure-to-thrive caught early and want a permanent record of how each litter grew. Especially valuable for first-time breeders learning what normal growth looks like and for breeders showing prospective buyers that the program tracks puppy development with discipline. Pairs with the Whelping Log and the Litter Vet Visit Record.
