01 / The basics
Every color is two pigments, switched and diluted.
A French Bulldog only makes two raw pigments: eumelanin (black-based) and phaeomelanin (red/tan-based). Every color you've ever seen advertised is those two pigments being switched on or off, diluted, restricted to patches, or diluted again. There is no "blue gene" that paints a dog blue. Blue is black pigment turned down.
Each switch lives at a specific locus (a location on a chromosome), and a dog carries two copies of each, one from each parent. Write them as a pair like D/d. Capital letters are usually dominant (only one copy needed to show); lowercase are recessive (two copies needed). Get those pairs for both parents and the litter is just arithmetic.

02 / The map
The nine loci that decide a Frenchie's coat.
These are the switches the predictor models. Most Frenchies are "clear" (homozygous common) on most of them, you only need to know the ones a parent actually carries.

Why breeders quote codes, not names. "Blue-carrying chocolate" is ambiguous; Dd bb is not. Every color below lists its genotype exactly as it appears on an Embark or UC Davis panel so you can match names to test results without guessing.
03 / Standard colors
The AKC-standard colors.
These are the four the AKC French Bulldog standard accepts in the show ring: brindle, fawn, cream, and white/pied. They're the foundation the "exotic" colors are built on top of.

Blue, lilac, chocolate & merle.
These are the colors people actually search for, and the ones that command the highest prices. Every one of them is technically an AKC show disqualification, which says nothing about the dog's health or value as a pet (more on that below). Here's what each one actually is, genetically.

05 / Coat length
The "fluffy" Frenchie is one recessive gene.
A fluffy (long-haired) French Bulldog is l/l on the FGF5 gene, nothing to do with color. Because it's recessive, both parents must carry it for a fluffy puppy to be possible, and two visually short-coated carriers (L/l × L/l) produce roughly one fluffy in four. It stacks on top of any color, which is why "fluffy lilac" and "fluffy merle" exist and sit at the top of the market.

06 / Health
The one pairing genetics tells you to avoid.
Color is mostly cosmetic, with one real exception. Breeding merle to merle gives roughly a quarter of the litter two merle copies (M/M, "double merle"), strongly linked to deafness and serious eye defects. This is a genetics decision, not an aesthetic one, and it's why the predictor raises a dedicated warning the moment both parents are set to merle.
Never breed merle × merle. If you want merle puppies, pair one merle (M/m) with a non-merle (m/m). Every puppy then has a healthy single dose or none, and zero risk of a double merle.

The other one to know: color dilution alopecia can affect some dilute (d/d) dogs, thinning coat over the diluted areas. It's manageable and not universal, but worth disclosing on blue and lilac lines.
07 / Registry status
"Show DQ" is not a health grade.
This trips up almost every new Frenchie buyer, so it's worth stating plainly: the AKC French Bulldog standard only recognizes brindle, fawn, cream and white for the show ring. Blue, lilac, chocolate, merle and fluffy are "disqualifications", meaning they can't compete in conformation, not that they're unhealthy, unregisterable, or lesser dogs.
A DQ-colored Frenchie can still be AKC-registered, and is fully recognized by other registries. If you're breeding for pets and the color market, DQ status is a marketing footnote. If you're breeding for the show ring, it's a hard line. Both are legitimate, just know which game you're playing before you pick a pairing. Common questions.
Isabella (lilac) is the rarest widely-recognized color because it requires a dog to be homozygous recessive on two separate loci at once, both blue (d/d) and chocolate (b/b). Fluffy lilacs and lilac merles are rarer still, stacking a recessive coat length or a dominant merle allele on top of that already-uncommon base.
No. AKC disqualification is a show-ring conformation classification only. Blue, lilac, chocolate, merle and fluffy are all DQ, yet the dogs are healthy, registrable pets accepted by other registries. The genuine health caveat is double merle (two merle copies), which carries real deafness and vision risk, a separate issue from color itself.
A fluffy Frenchie is homozygous recessive on the FGF5 gene (l/l), giving a long coat. Both parents must carry at least one long-coat allele for a fluffy puppy to be possible. It is a coat length rather than a color, so it can appear on any color base.
No. Blue is recessive dilution (d/d). Two visually blue parents are both d/d, so every puppy inherits a d from each side and is also blue. Non-blue puppies only appear when at least one parent merely carries dilution (D/d) rather than showing it.
